Sphere Earns Top BARS Gold Rating for Drone Safety
Sphere sets a benchmark in drone safety
Australian drone operator Sphere has reached Gold status in the Flight Safety Foundation’s Basic Aviation Risk Standard (BARS) program. It is the highest designation available for remotely piloted aircraft system (RPAS) operators in that framework.
Why the rating matters
BARS is one of the better-known standards used to assess aviation risk. In the drone sector, a result like this points to more than a good safety record — it suggests a mature safety management approach, documented procedures, and disciplined risk control.
A Gold rating generally signals that an operator has been able to demonstrate a strong level of training, operational control, and alignment with the program’s requirements. For RPAS companies, that matters because drone operations are increasingly used in environments where reliability and safety are non-negotiable.
What it means for the drone industry
Recognition under a standard like BARS can have practical value across the market:
- it can strengthen customer confidence;
- it shows readiness for structured safety oversight;
- it highlights safety as a competitive advantage;
- it sets a reference point for operators scaling commercial drone work.
As drones move deeper into industrial and commercial operations, safety expectations continue to rise. Standards that were once mainly associated with broader aviation are becoming more relevant to RPAS operators as well.
The bigger signal
Sphere’s achievement reflects a broader shift in the sector: safety is no longer an afterthought. For drone operators, it is becoming central to reputation, contract opportunities, and long-term growth.
A BARS Gold rating is not just a label. It shows that the market is moving toward more systematic operations, where efficiency must be matched by controlled risk and clear procedures.
