Somewear Horizon Brings Long-Range Drone Comms
Horizon targets affordable long-range UAV links
Somewear Labs has introduced Horizon, positioning it as the first affordable multi-network radio built for unmanned operations. The product is aimed at keeping drone command, control, and data exchange available both within line of sight and beyond it.
That matters because the communication layer often becomes the limiting factor as UAV missions move farther from the operator. Airframes can fly farther, batteries can last longer, and sensors can see more — but without a dependable link, mission capability drops quickly. Systems that support LOS/BLOS command and control are therefore becoming a core part of drone infrastructure.
Why multi-network matters
The key idea behind Horizon is flexibility. Instead of relying on a single communications path, a multi-network radio can help operators adapt to different mission environments and reduce dependence on one link alone. In practical terms, that can improve continuity of control and simplify deployment across varied use cases.
This approach is especially relevant for attritable drones — platforms designed to be lower-cost, more replaceable, and suitable for higher-risk missions. In that segment, communications must balance reliability with affordability, because the system has to make economic sense as well as operational sense.
The communication layer is becoming strategic
Drone development is often discussed in terms of autopilots, propulsion, payloads, and airframe design. Yet the communications stack is just as important. It determines how far a platform can operate, how quickly commands move between operator and aircraft, and how resilient the mission remains when conditions change.
Horizon’s launch reflects a broader shift in the UAV market toward more adaptable long-range connectivity. For operators, that could mean easier access to beyond-line-of-sight operations. For manufacturers, it adds another building block for designing flexible unmanned systems.
What to watch next
The real test for any radio platform is the field. As products like Horizon reach operators, the focus will turn to performance under interference, at range, and across different network conditions. That will show whether affordable multi-network communications can become a practical standard for long-range drone operations.
