Germany Funds Production of Over 500 AN-196 'Liuty' Strike Drones for Ukraine
Germany Bets on Ukrainian Strike Drones
The German federal government has signed its first contract to finance the serial production of over 500 AN-196 long-range strike drones — known by their combat designation 'Liuty' (Fierce) — on Ukrainian soil. The deal was confirmed through government sources in Berlin and marks one of the most concrete steps in Germany's expanding defense-industrial support for Ukraine.
What the AN-196 Brings to the Battlefield
The AN-196 is a domestically developed Ukrainian strike UAV built for deep-strike missions. Its key specifications:
- Range: up to 1,200 km
- Warhead capacity: up to 50 kg
- Mission profile: striking high-value targets well behind enemy lines
The drone is already in active combat use by the Ukrainian Armed Forces, hitting strategically important infrastructure at considerable distances from the front. Its combination of range and precision makes it a central element of Ukraine's asymmetric strike strategy against an adversary with significant conventional firepower advantages.
Beyond Arms Deliveries: Industrial Cooperation
German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul, during his July 1 visit to Kyiv, outlined a broader strategic vision for bilateral defense cooperation. Berlin's approach goes well beyond shipping finished weapons systems — it emphasizes a new depth of partnership:
- Joint ventures established on Ukrainian territory
- Technology transfers and manufacturing know-how
- Development of local production capacity
This model allows Ukraine to progressively reduce dependence on external supply chains while building a sustainable domestic defense industry — one that could eventually integrate into the wider European defense ecosystem.
Why This Matters for the UAV Sector
Contracts of this scale provide something the drone industry needs as much as funding: predictability. Stable long-term orders allow manufacturers to plan production lines, invest in tooling, and scale workforce capacity.
For Ukraine's rapidly growing UAV sector, foreign-financed domestic production represents a maturation milestone — shifting from ad hoc procurement toward a structured, industrial approach to unmanned systems manufacturing. It's a model other partner nations may look to replicate.
