Ukraine's 17th Army Corps: Structure and Combat Composition
A New Corps Takes Shape
Ukraine's Armed Forces continue to build out their operational structure. The 17th Army Corps of the Ground Forces has officially announced its combat composition, making it one of the latest additions to Ukraine's growing corps-level formations.
Combat Brigades
Three combat brigades form the core of the 17th Corps:
- 65th Separate Mechanized Brigade "Velykyi Luh" — established in 2022;
- 110th Separate Mechanized Brigade named after Major General Marko Bezruchko — also formed in 2022;
- 128th Separate Mountain Assault Transcarpathian Brigade — the most experienced of the three.
Compared to other Ukrainian army corps with disclosed compositions, the 17th is currently the smallest. An artillery brigade — typically part of such a formation — has not yet been officially announced.
Combat Support Units
Beyond its maneuver brigades, the corps is expected to include a standard set of support elements:
- Separate reconnaissance-strike battalion;
- Separate signals battalion;
- Separate support battalion;
- Separate logistics battalion;
- Separate repair and recovery battalion.
This support structure allows corps-level formations to operate with a significant degree of battlefield autonomy — from intelligence gathering to maintenance and resupply.
UAVs in Modern Corps-Level Operations
Contemporary army corps increasingly rely on unmanned aerial systems across all echelons. Reconnaissance-strike battalions at the corps level use UAVs for target acquisition, artillery fire correction, and battle damage assessment.
As the 17th Corps continues to grow and mature, the demand for capable UAV platforms — with reliable flight controllers, stable communication links, and robust onboard electronics — will only increase. The integration of unmanned systems is no longer optional; it is a fundamental part of how modern corps-level formations fight.
